Portia Drantch My Procedure Pilot · Littleton, Colorado

Medical procedure escort & driver

Someone to take you home.

Your surgery center will not discharge you to a taxi. They need a responsible adult there in person, to take your instructions and sign you out. So the asking starts: a daughter, a neighbor, someone owed a favor. Hire me instead, and you do not have to ask anyone.

The problem

Nobody should have to ask for a favor

Sedation means the facility has to hand you to a named adult who is physically present. A driver waiting in the parking lot does not count, so rideshare is out and the job lands on someone you know.

That means asking. A morning off work, three hours in a waiting room, the drive home. People put off procedures they need rather than make that call.

This is my job, not a favor. You are not imposing on anyone, and nobody owes anybody afterward.

The day

What it actually looks like

An example morning: a colonoscopy with a 7:00 check-in.

6:40 am

I am at your door

Not the curb. I carry your bag and wait while you lock up.

7:00 am

We check in together

I give my name as your escort, so it is on your chart from the start.

7:25 am

You go back. I stay.

I do not leave the building.

9:50 am

The nurse comes to find me

I write down your discharge instructions, ask what you will not think to ask, and sign you out.

10:20 am

Pharmacy, if you need it

You stay in the car.

10:45 am

Home, and settled

Water, phone, instructions on the counter. Then I call whoever you want called.

Call me and we will sort it out

Two days of notice is ideal. If it is tomorrow, call anyway.

Have these ready if you can:

  1. The date and your check-in time
  2. The facility and the procedure
  3. Your address, and whether there are stairs
  4. Who to call when you are home safely

Questions

The things people ask first

Are you a nurse or a caregiver?

No. I do not give medical advice and I do not provide hands-on care: no lifting, no transfers, no physically supporting you. I drive, I wait, I take your instructions, I sign, and I walk beside you. If you need hands-on help, you need a home health aide, and I will say so rather than take the booking.

Will the surgery center actually accept you?

Yes. They require a responsible adult present at discharge, not a relative specifically. Name me as your escort at check-in and it is clean. If your facility has an unusual policy, we will call them together beforehand.

Do you wait, or drop me off and come back?

I wait, in the building, the whole time. That is the actual service. A driver who leaves is a taxi, and the facility will not discharge you to one.

My mother is the patient and I live out of state. Can I book for her?

Often that is exactly who calls. I will confirm the details with her, then phone you the moment she is home. You get the discharge instructions from me directly, not relayed through someone who was sedated an hour earlier.

What if it runs long, or gets cancelled?

If it runs long, I stay, and the price moves to the next band only if we pass four hours. If the facility cancels on the day, there is no charge at all.

Is this covered by insurance or Medicare?

Not currently. This is private pay. Some Medicare Advantage plans cover non-emergency medical transport through their own providers, so it is worth one call to your plan. I will tell you honestly if their option suits you better.
